gyrate

  1. Yes, I was actually the one who suggested the E/N topic to Grokipedia a few weeks ago. Gyrate didn't make the cut, sadly.

I've actually been mulling ideas for a site like this for at least 20 years, but I was always too busy to build it properly. I finally decided I had no choice after getting banned from almost every "free speech" alternative to Reddit I tried. I'm starting to think I'm the only person capable of building something like this who's more interested in building a community for refugees of the old internet than just having the power to ban people. I have less than zero interest in being a moderator, so it'll be interesting to see how things evolve.

Thanks for joining. We've been back for about a year now, but I've been too busy getting this place up and running to spread the word much.

    Long-awaited updates (March 15)

I probably should have emphasized that this means sorting by "top" is actually useful now, and this is finally the minimum viable product I had in mind when I started working on this thing over two years ago.

The next steps are to clean things up and make it beautiful and fast...

    Oxyde ORM

I looked at this (and a few others) a while back, but only SqlAlchemy seemed mature enough for something as mission critical as gyrate dot org.

    "Likes?"

I herby declare that self-likes will not be allowed on this platform (because it simplifies a bunch of things, and I'm prioritizing authenticity over "boosting engagement" or whatever).

    P.S. Getting closer...

    Retro redesign?

I'm pretty happy with the layout here so far. I just like the monospace font and boxes with drop shadows. The problem is monospace fonts take up more room so it might not work as well on mobile, and it's hard to have a drop shadow when your background is already close to black. I also think a lot of the icons would look out of place with a style like that (which would also complicate things on mobile). I would eventually like to figure out how to give this place a more retro vibe though.
