i have some fun little sql/web/rest projects for private network usage, but i'm wondering if there are some other cool things. a little home chat server could be cool. teamspeak looks like it could be a fun alternative to discord to run on a private network (and maybe even open up to the internet so my family can chat wherever).
all of my invoices and work documents are stored on a nas server that i mount on whatever computer i'm using via nfs. i guess it could be kinda cool to have something like onlyoffice or nextcloud office to edit documents instead of having to install libreoffice everywhere, but i'm not really sold on wanting to mess with all that hassle. it may be good to do just to get the experience, because maybe i could sell the service to small businesses or something.
for my business inet server, i basically use ansible & lxc/lxd for whatever services i'm hosting. i really dislike docker, mostly because it's kind of the cool corpofaggot busywork solution for generating tech debt as job security, but i do think the concept of namespaces and cgroups is really cool, so figuring out podman could be fun.
it'd also be cool to have a private git server, and maybe look into how i can connect git actions to ansible or some other automation interface without relying on github or gitlab or some other pseudoproprietary ci/cd system.

i decided to ignore teamspeak, since it's gamer-tier, and went with installing mattermost. i was able to set up a dynamic a record through iwantmyname's dns manager (they have their own api for it, i just have to set up a cron job or something to report every so often). the very cool thing was using
certbot certonly --manual --preferred-challenges dns
to generate a dns txt record so i could generate some tls keys for my home server even though cox blocks ports 80 and 443.this is so much cooler than setting up media servers. now i just invite all my family members and we can use the mattermost client, which is basically like slack/discord, except the free license doesn't allow for group voice/video stuff, i guess. who cares, i don't want to hear my kids' stupid voices anyway.
it'd be a lot better if there was any sort of decent foss alternative, but there doesn't seem to be anything worth trying.

i have no answers. i also have an unused mini-itx server i used to use as a file and media server, but i haven't used it since i stopped consooooooooooooooming media.
speaking of consuming media, this guy is really fun to troll about that. he was suspiciously insistent a while back that people should set up media servers to torrent movies and "host their own netflix," but i just kept making fun of him and leaving comments like "why would i want to consume media? that sounds boring." i'm half convinced he's some kind of fed. so now he's banned me everywhere. 😂
